Dr. Boxing Zhao received B.E. in Mineral Processing in 1996 from Central South University, China and M.S. in Chemical Technology in 1999 from Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2004 from McMaster University. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher during 2005-2008 at University of California at Santa Barbara. He is an associate professor of Chemical Engineering in University of Waterloo. Dr. Zhao’s laboratory conducts research in biomimetic approaches and develop micro and nano composite structure and materials.

报告内容简介Abstract: Engineered interfacial layerplays important roles in the development of advanced materials and manufacturing processes at ever-**aller scales, where the adhesion and surface forces play the dominant roles in the materials assembly and packaging. Conventional adhesion technologies rely on surface modification and typically apply a thin layer of polymer adhesives to bond two surfaces together. Inspired by the superior adhesion power of biological organi**s and armed with the new understandings of biological surfaces obtained at the micro and nano scales, materials and adhesives scientists and engineers have been developing biomimetic solutions for interfacial material engineering. In this talk, I will present ourrecent understanding of such biological systems as gecko adhesive “hairy” foot pads and anti-adhesion surface of lotus leaves, researchadvances in the development of micro/nano-structured materials with multifunctional properties (hydro/oleophobicity, self-cleaning, electrical conductivity),and the recent exploration of using liquid crystal elastomer as a backing material to deliver switchable “on/off” adhesive properties for soft grippers.
